History
It was the marriage between the daughter of Marcel Noëllat, who had instigated domaine-bottling during the inter-war years, and Gaston Barthod that lent the estate its name. Gaston took over the running the domaine from his father-in-law in 1977 although Marcel remained in situ whilst he familiarized himself with the vineyard holdings and vinification techniques. After Marcel fully-retired, the domaine was divided between his two daughters, with Gaston tending the vines on his sister-in-law's behalf on a fermage agreement.
During the 1980's the domaine was enlarged with acquisitions in Gevrey-Chambertin. The domaine was run by
Gaston and his daughter
Ghislaine who had studied at the viticultural college in Beaune and learnt modern viticultural techniques that she introduced at the domaine: a sorting table to discard any unsatisfactory grapes before entering the
chai, prolonged ageing on the gross lees and purchasing their own bottling machine that had hitherto been done by a contractor. Her father passed away in 1999, since when she has managed the domaine on her own and continued to make, quite simply, some of the best Chambolle's money can buy.
